Badgers and Wildcats collide in Madison

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

02/21/2010 - Madison, WI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The 14th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers play host to the Northwestern Wildcats today in a Big Ten battle at the Kohl Center in Madison.

The Badgers enter the tilt on a down note, as they were knocked off, 68-52, at Minnesota on Thursday. It marked the most lopsided loss of the campaign for Wisconsin, which fell further back in the Big Ten race at 9-5 within the conference. Still at a solid 19-7 overall, the Badgers now return back home, where they have won 14 of 15 bouts this season.

Northwestern meanwhile, took a big hit on Wednesday, as it suffered an 81-70 home loss to a Penn State club that had been winless in league play. Coupled with a setback against Iowa, another team at the bottom of the Big Ten, the prior week and the Wildcats have basically played themselves out of the NCAA Tournament. Northwestern desperately needs this quality win today to keep any hope alive, as its final four regular-season games are all against teams with losing records. While the easy schedule may pad their win total, the Wildcats are more in need of signature victories at this point.

As for the all-time series, Wisconsin holds a commanding 108-61 advantage over Northwestern and that includes a 60-50 victory in the first meeting of the season.

The Wildcats were outscored at the foul line, 20-4, and outrebounded, 36-21, as they were upended by Penn State earlier in the week. Northwestern shot a sound 48.3 percent from the floor, but Penn State hit on an even better 56.3 percent from the field. John Shurna and Michael Thompson each tallied 17 points in the setback, while Jeremy Nash tacked on 14 points and four steals. For the season, Shurna tops the roster in scoring (17.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.2 rpg) and he has some range too, shooting 36.1 percent from downtown. Thompson, an even better 40.3 percent three-point shooter, adds 13.5 ppg and a team-high 4.2 apg the mix, while Drew Crawford contributes 11.1 ppg and 4.3 rpg.

The Badgers shot a horrific 30.5 percent from the floor and were dominated on the glass, 41-28, as they suffered a 68-51 loss to Minnesota on Thursday. Wisconsin was also outscored at the foul line, 23-5, as it had only seven attempts compared to 28 for the Golden Gophers. Trevon Hughes paced the team in defeat with 19 points and four steals, while Jason Bohannon posted 18 points. The game marked the return of Jon Leuer, who had been sidelined since injuring his wrist against Purdue on January 9th. Leuer, averaging 14.7 ppg and 5.9 rpg for the season, had four points in 26 minutes off the bench in the loss. Hughes helped pick up the slack in Leuer's absence and he leads the team in scoring (15.5 ppg) and steals (44) for the season. Bohannon is another dependable player, as he checks in with 12.2 ppg on the strength of 41.1 percent shooting from downtown.
